PAHRUMP, Nev. - Quilts 4 Cancer, a local non-profit organization, needs community support to reach out to help veterans' children who are suffering with cancer.
Longtime volunteers Jim and Barb Johnston provide love and support to others by sewing and quilting. As co-founders and directors of Quilts 4 Cancer, their mission is to give comfort to those with cancer through the warmth of quilts.
"We know cancer in children is hard. Many veterans are not home when their child has undergone cancer treatments, and we want to ensure all of these children in Nevada have a comfort quilt," Johnston said.
Quilts 4 Cancer has helped local veterans and their families since 2004. Quilts are made every year to help keep patients warm while they undergo treatment. Past veteran-based projects include Christmas stockings and care packages in quilted bags for troops.
With no local sponsor, the organization needs donations and supplies for the outreach project. This includes funding for batting and backing fabric, 100 percent cotton fabric tops and all other unwanted quilting and sewing supplies. Batting and wide backing fabric needs to be ordered "in bulk", when donations of funds received.
"I know funds are tight, yet I have faith $ 2500.00 will be donated to complete this project", noted Barb Johnston. Funding must be received by Sept. 1, to ensure all supplies are ordered and received for the volunteers to start quilt making.
"Our goal is to have 300 finished quilts by November 2011, and given to veterans' children in the same month," Johnston said.
